MyGeneration is a London based, UK registered charity that was set up four years ago. Embedded in the community in which we work, we have a wider vision than our neighborhood. Our big concept is resilient Londoners and the solutions that are possible when we exercise personal power. Our approach to the challenges facing poor urban communities is forward-thinking and positive. We fight the negative elements of poverty stricken communities while pushing the positive. Yes, it’s bad out here, but rather than going on about the 'dispossessed', (people once called the 'underclass', and then 'socially-excluded'), we talk about solutions. We challenge the people in our communities to do better; we don’t treat them like victims.
We work with a wide age range, concentrating on youth but offering practical support to adults. MyGeneration’s office is open five days a week and is recognized as the place for people to come if they want to build positive, sustainable networks. All our users are encouraged to set goals, become self-motivated and to have bigger aspirations than their background suggests. We encourage all who come to us to be free of dependency on drugs, crime or welfare. We promote our belief in the power of the family.
Our work is innovative: for the last two years we have motivated children to be connected, and stay connected, to their education, with our Step Up programme by removing some of the negative attitudes generated outside school that impact on performance. With our new initiative, the Oxford-MyGeneration programme, we have moved on from fighting the negative to pushing the positive, by helping pupils who are willing to develop their academic ability by introducing them to some of the most talented undergraduates in the country.
MyGeneration has a track record of successful partnerships: our project, Next Generation, a collaboration with the British Schools Exploration Society, is a ten-month programme that culminates in a wilderness expedition abroad.
We receive guidance from, and collaborate with, London Youth and Futures on our core youth services. In all our interactions, we strive to develop people to the point where they won’t need us, and could one day lead us.
All the best,
Shaun
