MyGeneration has recently set up a Mentoring Programme which has been specifically written for secondary school boys to boost their educational attainment and prevent involvement in crime. The aim of the programme is to meet with secondary school boys for an hour a week for fourteen weeks, in order to challenge and engage with them, so we can endeavour to transform them in to young men with a plan for their future. We will assist them in developing their self esteem , which is often an obstruction in learning, their social skills, working as a team, listening to instructions, using their initiative to solve problems, conflict resolution, numeracy and literacy skills.
All of the MyGeneration projects value input from parents in the work we do with young people, and this programme is no exception. We also appreciate that parenting is sometimes a thankless job, and in the current climate is probably one of the toughest roles , as we worry daily about the safety of our children. Over the fourteen week programme, targets will be set on how to achieve success in all areas of weakness, and each candidate will have a personal achievement plan, which is reviewed to ensure the boys can monitor their own successes. The Mentoring sessions will offer support and advice in all areas that may have an impact on the difficulties they experience with learning. Ultimately the programme will focus on personal achievement, communication and learning skills in the Classroom, rational thinking, building relationships, coping strategies and time management . We discuss and consider current youth issues such as what is the point of school? Gun and knife crime, employment, sexual relationships , alcohol and drugs .
